Big, Big Man

Of all the daily household chores, I mind laundry the least.  Mind you,  I don't enjoy a mass of dress shirts with their sleeves entangled like fishing worms; after a week in an office, the cleaners is where they belong! Dress shirts should stand at attention in the closet.

No, we are the kind of folks whose dirty clothes tell the tales of our days: sweat stained shirts, grassy knees, potting soil in the cuffs, soybeans in the pockets, and overalls carrying a more than faint aroma of eau de petroleum products.  After a dash of deep blue Arm & Hammer detergent, that crusty clothing emerges warm and fresh and ready for another day next to the earth.  Folding stiff and recalcitrant Carhartts, matching up woolen socks, turning yet another freebie T shirt right side out are but simple tasks, yet stowing them in the wardrobe restores a tiny bit of order to the universe.  These are not pretty clothes: they need not match. One black Nike sock and one black Hanes sock still make a pair. No, these are  hard working clothes, clothes that will likely wear out rather than go out of style.

Kevin was a hard working man.  Blake says no one could scoop corn harder or faster. He would start early and stay late,  with patience, without complaining.  He was a smart farmer, good with his hands and his machines whether it required brain or brawn to solve a breakdown.  Even though Blake has a fake tooth in his smile from a Kevin Hurst wielded tire breaker, he will tell you how proud he will always be of his talented hardworking brothers.

Kevin had a big arms to carry little children and a big laugh whenever he teased our screeching birthday girls about how many spankings and pinches it was going to take 'this year'. It didn't matter how many of us there were at any get-together, Kevin's laugh could be heard above them all.

Clothes don't make the man, but whatever Kevin wore....grimy sweatshirts or silly Christmas sweaters.... underneath was the kind of heart that is always in style

With all our love and respect...always....
